A Suyyestive Incident.—A significant illustra tion of the manner in which the British Uovern- inent looks after the humblest of its people occur red in this office a few daj3 ago. The British Consul, who had previously made an unsuccessful visit to another newspaper office of the city for the same purpose, called upon us to inquire the whereabouts ot *‘a British subject,” a poor man, who he had understood was employed in one of the printing offices ot the city. We were so fortunate a.s to be able to find the person he wa.s in quest of and the Consul then proceeded to read to him a letter from the British Consul in Charleston, informing him that he had receiv ed a communication from one of the British Pro- viiKies, .stating that the brother of the humble Englishman referred to was very ill, and that if he wished to see him before he died, or to send him any message he mUst do so at once. At thu same time, the Consul for Richmond informed him that he would forward any message be might 1 desire to send. Though this seemed to be re garded by the Con.sul as a matter of common duty, we. were much impressed with the incident. It was a striking illustration of the paternal and pa triarchal care which the British Government takes of the humblest of its subjects. Here were two or three dignified officials of Great Britain, on different parts of this continent, putting iu train a correspondence, in the luidst of extraordi nary obstacles, for the purpase of communicating from one humble British subject to another hum ble British subject such intelligence as that we have mentioned above. Who can wonder that Englishmen, no matter how far they wander from England, always speak of it as “/tomf/’ and no matter how long they live, always luve to the end a Government which not only treats them as sub jects, but as members of her family. We can well understand the feeling of an Englishman, who, on being politely assured by a Frenchman, that if he were not a Frenchman, he would prefer to be an Englishman, replied, “If 1 were not -^n Englishman, 1 wouldn’t care a d—n what 1 was.” Richmond Dispatch. Sudiletdy Waked Vp.—Not long ago, there was published in this paper a revolutionary re miniscence, wherein allusion was made to the suf- Jerings ot Gen. Greene’s army, in the early strug gle for independence, for the want of suitable c'othing, which in many instances rendered the men unfit for service. It chanced that a copy of the paper fell into the hands of a wealthy citizen •)f Alabama, who had previously resisted all the appeals of patriotism to his purse. We don’t I know how it happened that he put such a novel j interpretation upon the revolutionary article, but I after he got through he exclaimed, “By Jove! ] that will never do in the world!” So he collect- I ed together a considerable quantity of clothing 1 and other articles requisite for the comfort of the i soldier, and packing the whole securely, directed the box to ^‘•Gnieral Greene of the Confederate Armij” and started it off to Richmond. It ar rived here in due time, and as a matter of course the depot agent was somewhat puzzled to find “General Greene;” but it was finally turned over to the military authorities, who distributed the contents where it was needed. Whether the Alabamian had been asleep ever since the revo lutionary war or not, we don’t undertake to say; but we give him credit for doing a good thing, even though we could not help laughing when we heard the story.—Richmond Dispatch. The Fijhtiny itiaterial” at the hotels.—Every- I>ody who traverses the streets of Richmond is aware of the immense quantity of gay and gorge ous fighting material disporting itself about the doors of the hotels. The other day one of our (^hoctaw warriors, who had just paid his respects at the War ]>epartment, was .sauntering paat the hotel, where a handsome and highly deco rated major was making himself the cynosure of female eye?. The Indiitn was evidently much struck by the military appearance of our hero and pointing to the major’s sword, exclaimed: “Reg’- i lar?” “No.” replied the Major. “Volunteer?” j “No—militia.” Drawing himself up, the “native” trave the possessor of the ivory-mounted pi.stol a look of ineffable contempt, as he exclaimed wsth ! a t^ne of disgust not ea.-^ily described, “me—lisli, j oh he—elle.”—Richm'm^l Rtamnirr. Limohi's First Lt-vee.—The great fact which marked the levee with some degree of importance, ; and which may hereafter be (juoted as significant I is, that the Ministers of England, France, Spain, I and Prussia did not appear at the levee; but the ; Mi»^istcrs of Russia, Sweden, Bremen, and Nica- ; ragua were present, and the Russian Minister was ' especially cordial in his conversation w^th the I’resident.— Letter from Washintjton. The German Wvmm.—Two thousand German women met in St. Jjouis on W^ednesday evening, theliTth ult. to concert action and memorialize the Yankee Government for the pay of their husbands, j now in the Federal service. A monster petition i was T*rep'ared and signed by all to be sent to Gen. 1 Ilallock. The Missouri “Democrat” of the 30th j ult. says: j “The appearance of many of the women left no ^ room for doubt as to truth of what the above pe- j tition sets forth and unl'..ss relief is speedily offer j ed, there will be great sufl'ering during the winter ; among the poor families ot the (ierman volunteers.” ] JVii(itecr.—In the event of war between the ■ Tnited State.-> and England, what will become of i Seward’s doctrine that privateers are pirates? ! We predict that the first act of the hypocritical ! scoundrel will be to issue letters of nttirque and I reprisal, and the Yankee privateers will be fitted i out at once for sea. But the British blockading j s(juadrons will block that game effectually. I Richmond Dispatch. The great fire of London, which broke out o\ the 2d of September, 1600, burned for four days and nights. It destroyed one hundred and thir teen thousand houses and eighty-six churches, inclusive of St. Paul's Cathednil. It laid waste four hundred streets and four hundred and thir ty-six acres of land. The Mobile Register says considerable quanti- I ties of Alabama s-.k are arriving in Mobile. The business of salt making will soon be undertaken j by the company chartered by the Legislature, to I whom the Salt Springs have been leased by the State. ioniiny Doun —NassHVILLE, Dec. 24. —Gold sold here on yesterday at twenty-five per cent, premium.
